ABSTRACT

Respiratory diseases are one of the major health issues described in intensive pig production, causing important economic losses. However, there is little information on the prevalence, etiology and clinical-pathological presentation of these diseases in wild boars. For this reason, this work investigated the presence in captive wild boars of pneumonic lesions and bacterial pathogens commonly detected and associated with respiratory diseases in domestic pigs. A total of 226 captive wild boar lungs from two farms were examined in a slaughterhouse in Southern Brazil. The pneumonic lesions were classified as cranioventral, dorsocaudal, and disseminated, and the quantification of lesions was calculated. From the total of 226 lungs, 121 were collected for laboratory examination. Lungs with macroscopic lesions suggestive of pneumonia were collected for histological, bacteriological and molecular analysis. The molecular analysis was performed to detect the presence of Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae, Glaesserella (G.) parasuis, Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma (M.) hyorhinis and Streptococcus (S.) suis serotype 2. The percentages of histological lesions and bacterial agents and their association were calculated. Cranioventral consolidation (75.2%) was the most prevalent macroscopic lung lesion, followed by disseminated (21.5%) and dorsocaudal (3.3%) distribution. Microscopically, chronic lesions were the most prevalent, representing 70.2% of the lungs. Moreover, BALT hyperplasia was present in 86.5% of the lungs, suppurative bronchopneumonia in 65.7%, and alveoli infiltrate in 46.8%. Six bacterial pathogens commonly described as agents of pig pneumonia were identified by bacterial or molecular methods: Pasteurella (P.) multocida, S. suis, M. hyopneumoniae, A. pleuropneumoniae, G. parasuis and M. hyorhinis. Twenty-eight different combinations of pathogens were identified in 84 samples (69.4%). The most common combinations were: M. hyopneumoniae and A. pleuropneumoniae (13.1%), M. hyopneumoniae, G. parasuis and M. hyorhinis (10.7%), and M. hyopneumoniae, A. pleuropneumoniae and G. parasuis (8.3%). Additionally, M. hyopneumoniae was the most frequent pathogen detected in this study, representing 58.7% of the samples. The detection of M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis by PCR was associated with the presence of BALT hyperplasia (P < 0.05) and there was also an association between the detection of M. hyopneumoniae by PCR and suppurative bronchopneumonia (P < 0.05). In addition, a significant association (P < 0.05) between the detection of M. hyopneumoniae and A. pleuropneumoniae by PCR and the histological classification (acute, subacute or chronic lesions) was observed. The results of this study were similar to those observed in slaughtered domestic pigs, although, the detection of opportunist pathogens was less frequent than that usually described in pig pneumonia. The high prevalence of pneumonia in captive wild boars at slaughter and the similar characteristics of pneumonia in captive wild boars and domestic pigs suggest that the close phylogenetic relationship between pigs and wild boars could influence the susceptibility of both species to the colonization of the same pathogens, indicating that captive wild boars raised in confined conditions could be predisposed to respiratory diseases, similar to domestic pigs.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Estimar la percepción de los pacientes sobre la atención médica en el primer nivel de atención. Metodología Se aplicó una encuesta telefónica a pacientes atendidos en dos meses diferentes del 2012, indagando por variables sociodemográficas, relaciones médico-paciente y acerca del proceso de atención médica. Resultados Se encuestaron 804 pacientes. El tiempo promedio de acceso a la atención fue de 9,6 días. El 78% refiere haber podido contar todo lo que sentía al médico, el 60% que el médico le explicó lo que tenía y, uno de cuatro,que indagó por su familia. El 30% sintió alivio completo luego de la atención médica. La calificación promedio de la atención médica fue de 7,9 (DE ±1,7). Las variables relacionadas con las calificaciones más altas fueron: Poder contarle todo al médico (OR 7,5IC 95% 1,8-31), ser examinado (OR7,5 IC 95% 1,5-38,5, explicarle quétiene (OR 5,2IC 95% 1,8-15), preguntar por la familia (OR 5,8 IC 95% 2,1-16,1)y haberlo atendido antes (OR 3,5 IC 95% 1,4-8,6).Conclusiones La comunicación extensa con el paciente es tan importante como el enfrentar la enfermedad en el acto médico...


To assess outpatients' perceptions of medical care. Methodology A telephone survey was administered to patients treated in two different months in 2012 with a focus on socio-demographic variables, access to care, physician-patient relationships, and on the process of medical care. Results 804 patients were surveyed. The average time of access to care was 9.6 days. 78 % reported having been able to tell the doctor everything that they felt, 60 % reported that the doctor explained what they had, and one in four patients said that the doctor asked about their families. 30 % felt complete relief after medical care. The average rating of care was 7.9 (SD ±1.7). Variables related to the highest ratings were: having been able to tell that doctor everything that they felt (OR 7.5 CI 95 % 1.8-31), having been examined (OR 7.5 CI95 % 1.5-38.5), that the doctor explained what they had (OR 5.2 CI 95 % 1.8-15), that the doctor asked about the family (OR 5.8 CI95 % 2.1-16.1), and if doctor had treated them formerly (OR 3.5 CI95 % 1.4-8.6). Conclusions Extensive communication with the patient is as important as dealing with the disease in the medical act...

ABSTRACT

The level of P4 at the time of embryo transfer (ET) is important. P4 concentrations and numbers of corpora lutea for 126 recipients were evaluated. Nuclear transfer embryos were transferred into 126 surrogates. 11 maintained their pregnancy until full-term delivery, 17 miscarried, and implantation failed in 98 animals. P4 levels in the full-term group were significantly different from those of the pigs that aborted or in which implantation failed (p < 0.05). However, the numbers of corpora lutea were not significantly different. These findings indicate that the concentration of progesterone can be an important factor for successful ET in pigs.

ABSTRACT

Pigs are the most likely source animals for cardiac xenotransplantation. However, an appropriate method for estimating the cardiac function of micropigs had not been established. Computed tomography (CT) analysis aimed at estimating cardiac function and assessing the coronary arteries has not been carried out in micropigs. This study determined the feasibility of evaluating cardiac function in a micropig model using multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) and compared the cardiac function values with those of conventional pigs. The mean age of the conventional pigs and micropigs was approximately 80 days and approximately 360 days, respectively. The mean body weight in the conventional pigs and micropigs was 29.70 +/- 0.73 and 34.10 +/- 0.98 kg, respectively. Cardiac MDCT detected ejection fractions of 52.93 +/- 3.10% and 59.00 +/- 5.56% and cardiac outputs of 1.46 +/- 0.64 l/min and 1.21 +/- 0.24 l/min in conventional pigs and micropigs, respectively. There were no significant differences in cardiac function between conventional pigs and micropigs in the reconstructed CT images. There were also no differences in the coronary angiographic images obtained by MDCT. It is expected that the results of this study will help improve understanding of cardiac function in micropigs. The data presented in this study suggest that MDCT is a feasible method for evaluating cardiac function in micropigs.

ABSTRACT

This study examined effects on the developmental competence of pig oocytes after somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) or parthenogenetic activation (PA) of : 1) co-culturing of oocytes with follicular shell pieces (FSP) during in vitro maturation (IVM); 2) different durations of maturation; and 3) defined maturation medium supplemented with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA; control), pig follicular fluid (pFF), cysteamine (CYS), or beta-mercaptoethanol (beta-ME). The proportion of metaphase II oocytes was increased (p < 0.05) by co-culturing with FSP compared to control oocytes (98% vs. 94%). However, blastocyst formation after SCNT was not improved by FSP coculture (9% vs. 12%). Nuclear maturation of oocytes matured for 39 or 42 h was higher (p < 0.05) than that of oocytes matured for 36 h (95-96% vs. 79%). Cleavage (83%) and blastocyst formation (26%) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in oocytes matured for 42 h than in other groups. Supplementation of a defined maturation medium with 100 micrometer CYS or 100 micrometer beta-ME showed no stimulatory effect on oocyte maturation, embryo cleavage, or blastocyst formation after PA. beta-ME treatment during IVM decreased embryo cleavage after SCNT compared to pFF or PVA treatments, but no significant difference was found in blastocyst formation (7-16%) among the four treatment groups. The results indicated that maturation of oocytes for 42 h was beneficial for the development of SCNT embryos. Furthermore, the defined maturation system used in this study could support in vitro development of PA or SCNT embryos.
